Summary:

  • Limit the amount of explanation
  • Make it sound natural, but not too natural
  • Insert actions between large patches of dialogue to help break it up
  • Don’t say too much
  • Read dialogue out loud to see if it flows

Questions:

1) Why is it bad to use synonyms for “said”? Repeating the same word over and over annoys me. >_<

2) If the characters know something the reader doesn’t, is it then OK to have them state the obvious?

3) How do you convey an accent without totally mucking up the dialogue?
